Marag Valley Spires

FORMIDABLE would be understating the daunting crawl/climb atop the Dupag Rock Mountain at Marag Valley, Apayao. More than strength, it is one’s conviction that takes a beating once inside the fatally sharp-edged spires, narrow-winding crevices and slippery slopes that shape Dupag. It is remarkable that rebels would use it as fortress to escape their enemies, but transforms into a veritable playground among the young locals who also served as our impossibly nimble tour guides.

And the reward: a spectacularly out-of-this-world panorama of the Apayao horizon nestled among plateaus of alien-like rock structures only possible if one takes the courageous and nerve-testing route to bravely face life and death just a slice of rock away from one wrong slip.
